Reformer Pilates

101 Pilates Reformer Classes

Just like Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates is a low-impact workout that improves core strength, alignment and promotes a sense of mindfulness and well-being.

The main difference is in the equipment used. The Reformer consists of a sliding carriage, equipped with adjustable springs, pulleys, straps, and a foot bar. These components work together to create a unique resistance system that enables you to target muscles differently, leading to faster results as the muscles adapt to the constant tension of the springs.

The machine can look intimidating but once you learn the basics there are literally hundreds of exercises you can do which are impossible on any other apparatus. But it won’t all be new to the regular Pilates goer, you’ll recognise many of the moves; like the bridge, tabletops, single leg stretches and hip circles. Even the breathing is the same.

It is suitable for any level of fitness, as spring positions and complexity of move can be modified. The classes can be adapted to work on specific issues, like areas of arthritis, lower back pain or building stronger upper abdominal muscles for neck pain.

Reformer Pilates is super popular, with celebrities, sports people and just about everyone who gives it a go because you get fast results and finish feeling energised rather than exhausted. You’ll leave having worked your muscles more intensely, deeper and in a different way than ever before and it’s great for releasing tension too.

I teach Reformer Classes at D1 Gyms in St. Johns, Worcester on a Tuesday at 9.30am and Saturday and Sunday at 10am. You can book classes at D1 and for non-members of D1 it’s £25 per class.

Ros Cale

“I just wanted to thank you for the brilliant reformer class this morning, you not only made it fun but I  really felt that what we did will improve my core strength each time I come.

The studio is very cosy and peaceful and I really felt good when I left if not a little shaky, I’m sure I will ache tomorrow.

You are really inspiring Pilates teacher and your enthusiasm really rubs off.”
