Key Pillar - Nutrition

Why I Believe Nutrition Is So Important

Of all the pillars of lipoedema management, nutrition is one that I feel particularly passionate about, and the one where I think you can get the quickest wins.

Through my own experience, I've come to appreciate just how much the food we eat can influence how we feel. It's not simply about weight or appearance. It's about nourishing our bodies, supporting our energy, looking after our overall health and finding ways to feel more comfortable in ourselves.

Lipoedema is a complex condition, and there is still much we don't fully understand. Although no specific diet has been proven to treat or cure lipoedema, emerging research and personal experiences suggest that the way we eat may play a valuable role in supporting our wellbeing and managing symptoms.

For me, the important shift has been moving away from a diet heavy in convenience to a whole food diet. I try to eat as much as I can from natural, homemade sources. I also find that a low carbohydrate diet gives me the most energy and least inflammation. I was very overweight in my 20s but since the age of about 32 I had maintained a weight of about 60kg, which for my height still classed me as overweight. When I started teaching Pilates my weight dropped to about 50kg which is perfect for me, and whilst I still feel that my legs are disproportionate to the rest of me, I have very little pain on a daily basis. When I was carrying excess weight, everything felt like a struggle, my mobility was restricted, I felt sluggish and because I felt like this it made me feel negatively about myself, which in turn then made me pick the wrong foods.

This isn't about perfection, strict rules or eliminating everything you enjoy. It's about understanding your body, making informed choices and discovering what works for you.

Food isn't the enemy. It can be one of the ways we learn to care for ourselves.

Your daily menu

  • Breakfast

These also make great snacks or are useful for food on the go.

  • Lunch

I’ve kept it simple. You can put anything you like in the wrap as long as you are having some protein and some healthy fats.

  • Dinner

This is too much for one meal so save some of the protein balls for snacks. If you had turkey for lunch replace the meat with minced beef.
